Definition:
Centrioles are cylindrical structures, found in
animal cells, that are composed of groupings of
microtubules arranged in a 9 + 3 pattern. They help to
organize the assembly of
microtubules during
cell division.
Full article >>>Centrioles are important in the
cell division process,
organizing the
mitotic spindle upon which the
chromosomes are pulled apart. Some
animal cells are able to divide their
chromosomes without
centrioles, for instance in female
meiosis.

cell through the process of
mitosis.

CentrosomeThe structure of
centrioles is similar to that of basal bodies in that they have 9 triplets of
microtubules.
Centrioles occur in pairs; each one oriented at a right angle to the other.

Prokaryotes, of course, lack spindles and
centrioles; the
cell membrane assumes this function when it pulls the by-then replicated
chromosomes apart during
binary fission.

mitosis; involves chromosomal condensation,
nuclear membrane breakdown, and the
migration of
centrioles to opposite poles.
prophase I: the first phase of meiotic
division, during which
crossing over takes place.
